Speaking after been sworn in today, the new Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions, Chris Craigie SC paid tribute to his predecessor Damian Bugg QC, describing him as “a distinguished lawyer and an outstanding servant of public justice”.  Mr Craigie noted that during a record eight-year tenure, as DPP Mr Bugg had been “tireless, thorough and courageous in maintaining the independence and integrity of the CDPP’s office”. 

Mr Craigie expressed confidence in the senior management team and staff of the DPP’s offices around Australia.  He said that during a two-week familiarisation in Canberra and some other capital city branches he had been “greatly impressed by the dedication amongst the mix of experienced practitioners and young lawyers.  Many of the latter were “plainly amongst the best and brightest in the country”. 

As CDPP Mr Craigie said that he would “look forward to leading the DPP’s diverse team in “serving the Australian people through the continued provision of an effective and ethical prosecution service for the Commonwealth”.
