In addition to casework, the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions (CDPP) also contributes to the work of the criminal justice system in broader ways. The CDPP’s Corporate Plan envisages a prosecution service which involves ‘best practice’ in both the recruitment and development of staff, and also in the delivery of a prosecution service to the Australian people. The CDPP actively pursues this goal in the management of its practice. The CDPP manages its practice in terms of being a national office in ways which enhance both the effectiveness of prosecutors and the maintenance of a federal prosecution service.
In addition, the CDPP provides training to prosecutors in a range of areas, including advocacy. The CDPP works hard to maintain good working relationships with investigating agencies and departments. There is a system of national liaison with all of the CDPP’s major referring client agencies, which complements liaison which is conducted at a regional level. In addition, the CDPP maintains a number of manuals and policies which assist law enforcement agencies in their role in investigating Commonwealth offending. The CDPP also provides a valuable system of training and other support to investigators.
