Steroid Importation

The defendant came to the attention of Customs following attempts to import goods suspected of being prohibited. After receiving a warning from Customs, the defendant arranged for the further importation of 4 quantities of anabolic/androgenic substances in 3 consignments from China. These consignments were addressed to false names and delivered to the business address of the defendant’s own company.

The consignments contained:

  • 223.7g of pure Nandrolone Decanoate in powder and liquid form – estimated value $15,000 to $37,000;
  • 408.59g of pure Testosterone Enanthate in white powder form – estimated value $21,000 - $53,000; and
  • 267g of pure Stanozolol and 244.73g of pure Testosterone Propionate concealed amongst 15 computer cables – estimated value $43,000 to $105,000.
Emails and SMS messages downloaded from the defendant’s mobile phone and laptop computer, and steroid manufacturing equipment seized from the defendant’s premises, indicated that the defendant was importing the substances for commercial re-sale.

The defendant pleaded guilty to 4 counts of importing Tier 1 goods (anabolic or androgenic substances) without approval pursuant to section 233BAA(4) of the Customs Act 1901 and was sentenced to 6 months imprisonment to be released forthwith to be of good behaviour for 2 years.
