On 27 July 2018, Yunhui Xue, a 26-year-old Chinese national who had overstayed his student visa, was sentenced to five years and six months’ imprisonment for smuggling 11.32kg of ephedrine contained in two consignments into Australia.
Following a lengthy 10-week trial in the Supreme Court of Western Australia, seven men involved in trying to smuggle 182kgs (145.6kgs pure) of methamphetamine onto a remote beach in Western Australia, were collectively jailed for over 164 years.
On 18 April 2018, 23-year-old Canadian national Melina Roberge was sentenced to eight years’ imprisonment, to serve a minimum four years and nine months, after pleading guilty to her part in smuggling nearly 72 kilograms of cocaine into Australia on board a luxury cruise liner in August 2016, with an estimated value of $21.5 million.
On 22 November 2016, Rayan Schanker was sentenced to 18 years’ imprisonment in the County Court in Melbourne for attempting to possess a commercial quantity of unlawfully imported methamphetamine (5.9kg), and with trafficking a commercial quantity (a further 1.8kg) of the substance.
Recently serving four years in prison for drug importation, repeat offender 42-year-old Malachy Okoli of Padstow New South Wales was sentenced to 14 years and 6 months imprisonment with a non-parole period of 9 years and 6 months imprisonment for engaging in an ongoing enterprise of importing border controlled drugs into Australia.
Two Taiwanese men, 25-year-old Ming Hsuan Ou and 30-year-old Chun Lan, were charged with trafficking a commercial quantity of a controlled drug, being 92.8 kilograms of methylamphetamine, concealed inside suitcases which had been imported into Australia on a flight from Taiwan to Melbourne on 24 May 2014. On 30 July 2014 Ho Man Samson Law arrived at Brisbane International Airport on flight from Hong Kong with eight packages containing 999.8g of pure methylamphetamine concealed inside two pairs of Lycra bike shorts he was wearing underneath his pants.
On 26 March 2012 the defendant arrived at Sydney International Airport from Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. The defendant declared on his Incoming Passenger card that he was carrying food and subsequently directed to a Customs examination barrier for the purposes of a baggage examination.
