The Queensland Court of Appeal has dismissed an appeal by Dr Roger Munro against the sentence imposed on him following conviction for three counts of fraud.

On 21 December 2023 in the Brisbane District Court, Mr Nghath pleaded guilty to all five charges of defrauding the Commonwealth of $94,777.82 by fraudulently claiming disaster recovery payments and was sentenced of 4 years’ imprisonment, with a non-parole period of 21 months. The court also made a reparation order for the outstanding debt of $93,641.10.

Willie Arthur Mareko was charged with 18 offences contrary to provisions of the Criminal Code (Cth). Mr Mareko pleaded guilty to all offences and on 19 September 2023, Justice Crow of the Supreme Court of Queensland sentenced Mr Mareko to a total sentence of 14 years imprisonment, with a non-parole period of 8 years.

Brett Evans was charged with 35 offences contrary to the CATSI Act in that he used his position as an employee of an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander corporation dishonestly, with the intention of directly or indirectly gaining an advantage for himself.
