Record penalty for devastating truck crash
On 28 May 2026, Cleanaway Operations Pty Ltd (Cleanaway) was fined a record $1.1 million for two counts of failing to comply with a health and safety duty, contrary to section 32 of the Work Health and Safety Act 2011 (Cth) (WHS Act). The penalty comes 10 years after the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (Cth) commenced proceedings against the waste management company and 12 years after a fatal crash in South Australia which led to the investigation into Cleanaway’s non-compliance with the WHS Act.
NDIS provider ‘put himself first’ defrauding 19 people with disabilities
South Australian man Paul Tilbury defrauded the NDIA and made false claims against 19 NDIS clients on 42 occasions over a two year period between April 2017 and April 2019. The false claims totalled $404,010,58.
South Australian café owner sentenced to 6 years’ imprisonment for GST fraud
Shaun Both of South Australia lodged 9 quarterly Business Activity Statements with the ATO. As a result of false statements in the BAS, in circumstances where the café had ceased trading, the offender dishonestly obtained $1,001,004 in GST.
The High Court allows the CDPP’s appeal in a case involving a conspiracy to import a commercial quantity of border controlled drugs: the decision in Kola

On 17 April 2024, the High Court handed down judgment in the matter of Director of Public Prosecutions (Cth) v Kola [2024] HCA 14. In doing so, the Court unanimously allowed the CDPP’s appeal. The case concerned elements and directions that are permissible in conspiracy cases, and also the operation of the co-conspirators’ rule.
Man sentenced after using fake personas to solicit and transmit child abuse material
On 21 December 2022, Judge Davison of the District Court of South Australia sentenced Cameron Bowen for both Commonwealth and state child exploitation offences occurring over a period of more than 5 years.
