Alert: Hoax phone calls continuing to target Australians

Date of Publication

Members of the public are continuing to receive phone calls supposedly from the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions (CDPP) requesting people to contact the Office in relation to a tax fraud warrant – ultimately seeking people to deposit money into a bank account, to send it overseas or attend a post office and put money on a Deposit Card. The calls suggest that your home is under surveillance as the correspondence sent via registered mail have returned unsigned. The calls are not from a member of the CDPP or the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) and neither organisation operate in the manner outlined. We strongly advise people to be vigilant when receiving phone calls of this nature. If in doubt about the authenticity of a call that you receive from the CDPP, contact us via our website. You can report scams at www.scamwatch.gov.au. CDPP Media Contact: communications@cdpp.gov.au or 02 6206 5708 -------------------------- What the callers are saying:

  • We are from the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions in Canberra, working on behalf of the ATO.
  • There is a warrant out for your arrest relating to tax fraud.
  • Your address is under surveillance.
  • Our attempts to notify you via registered mail have been returned unsigned.
  • You need to follow our instructions and pay money so we can remove the warrant and ensure the police don't arrest you.
