Drug smuggler gets six years’ jail
Dean O’Malley, 45, was today sentenced to four years and six months’ imprisonment with a non-parole period of two years and three months, after being found guilty of importing a marketable quantity of methamphetamine. (He has already served 268 days in prison.)
On 31 October 2017, the New South Wales resident flew into Melbourne International Airport from America and was selected by Australian Border Force officers to undergo an electronic body scan. Despite declaring he had no drugs on him when he signed his incoming passenger card, he told the officers that he had meth inside him.
O’Malley was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital where it was found he had two packages, wrapped in condoms, containing 143.5 grams of methamphetamine (115.2 grams pure) hidden in his rectum.
The estimated street value of the imported methamphetamine was between $35,875 and $71,750.
Data on his mobile phone showed O’Malley had used a WhatsApp account to send messages to and from a person referred to as ‘Al’ about the price of the drugs, and also made payments to a third party in America.
